Introduction

To gain an understanding of the wide array of subjects applicable to our industry, one must be prepared to search out information from many, many different sources. Literature searches should represent only a starting point. To obtain a thorough, up-to-date understanding, one should continue the search by talking with person(s) behind the written word. Having to "dig" for information is what makes it challenging. That is why PSTC has launched its educational programming to supplement the written word by providing the forum for exchange with experts. The lack of centralized information was one of the primary reasons for launching the Tape University series in the early 1990s.

There are few books dedicated to pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs). John Johnston has attempted to bring together as much information as possible into his book. Prior to that, Skeist had prepared a published handbook plus a few client contract studies on PSAs. Satas compiled a series of articles in his handbook. There are also a couple of books with pressure sensitive technology in their titles that contain abstracts of patents. These provide both historical perspectives and good technical information.

Except for patents, tape companies have rarely published technical information. Thus, the bulk of the primary sources of information are those published by suppliers, either in their company literature, articles published in periodicals, patents and presentations at PSTC seminars. Companies with research departments have invested in retaining information and have file drawers filled with referenced materials. PSTC continues to work in sharing published resources to improve the knowledge transfer of reliable resources for PSAs and tape information.
