NUREMBERG, GERMANY -- Paints and adhesives manufacturers can learn how to better formulate products by mastering the earths elements with support from Celanese Emulsion Polymers at the 2011 European Coatings Show (ECS). With new data demonstrating the high performance of vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsions in exterior architectural paints, Celanese will showcase technology that offers excellent protection, including fire retardant properties, and provides the basis for novel coating solutions.

ECS attendees will learn first hand the advantages of Celaneses VAE emulsions marketed under the Mowilith brand throughout Europe. "VAE emulsions have gained strong acceptance for use in low odor, low emission interior paints for over a decade demonstrating the power of water and how waterborne paints help to protect the air and the earth," said David Faust, market segment manager. "Today, we are moving the VAE emulsions outdoors. At ECS, we will showcase our patented VAE inclusion technology for use in facade coatings, plasters and also in exterior insulation finishing systems (EIFs)" said Faust.

Addressing facade paints with VAE

"Formulators confront many technology choices when it comes to performance, but Celanese offers one of the broadest range of options through our extensive portfolio of vinyl- and acrylic-based products," said Dr. Stephan Krieger, application technology manager for paints, who will present a paper at ECS on VAE-based emulsions for facade paints. "Being a global leader in VAE technology, we continually work to optimize the dispersion. In turn, paints and coatings manufacturers know they can look to Celanese for novel solutions that address a wide range of formulation challenges and opportunities."

Dr. Kriegers presentation will focus specifically on new VAE inclusion technology, which enables synthesis of an emulsion that combines the positive properties of vinyl-based emulsions and hard pure acrylic polymers, associated with good weathering behaviour. Recent burn data on EIFs panels demonstrates that Mowilith LDM 1865 has better fire retardant properties in architectural applications than competing technologies. Attendees can view a video of the burn tests and learn more about the fourth earth element, fire, at the Celanese booth (Hall 7A, Stand 105).

Leading the industry toward coatings and adhesives innovations

In addition to the comprehensive line of Mowilith VAE emulsions on display, other innovative Celanese products being showcased at ECS include pure acrylic emulsions for use in gloss paints, varnishes and lacquers featuring excellent outdoor weathering and block resistance.

Visitors can also learn more about Celaneses emulsions for a variety of adhesive applications. For paper packaging and converting adhesives (pp&c) Mowilith LDM 1081 enables the formulation of low migration adhesives to meet food packaging regulations and additionally offer excellent nozzle machining. ECS visitors can learn more about the attributes of Mowilith emulsions for pp&c adhesives by viewing the video at Hall 7A, Stand 105. Celanese also offers a broad portfolio for woodworking adhesives including Mowilith DHF 57S for high set speed D3 adhesives to increase productivity in use.
