The touch of a finger is all you need to be able to take the train a little while later, get to the right destination by car ? or even “surf” around the whole world at blazing speed. More and more terminals such as ticket vending machines and smaller devices from the consumer electronics segment, including the iPod, iPad, and navigation devices for use in vehicles, can now be operated conveniently using touch-sensitive screens, called touchscreens or touch panels. At present, the market is dominated by two different systems. In the resistive type, which is still widespread, users select menu options by exerting slight pressure with a stylus or finger. The new, extremely high-performance capacitive type, which experts forecast will generate tremendous growth rates, responds to just a light touch of the finger. The surface is generally made of high-quality glass, covering a kind of sandwich structure made up of multiple functional layers that transmit the impulse from the finger within fractions of a second.
