Showa Denko to Start Commercial Production of Thiol-Based Curing Agent

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has decided to start full-scale sales of a new curing agent Karenz MT PE1 in the middle of 2011, building a production facility within the premises of its Kawasaki Plant. The product will be used in UV-curing resins and epoxy resins for paints, coatings and adhesives.

To facilitate curing of UV-curing resins, the amount of polymerization initiators is increased. In the case of epoxy resins, the temperature is increased. However, when multifunctional-thiol-based Karenz MT PE1 is used, the curing rate is substantially improved. This leads to reductions in the amount of energy for production and processing, and improvement in adhesiveness and elongation.

The use of Karenz MT PE1 in UV-curing resins helps reduce the amount of UV irradiation and polymerization initiators, restricting coloring of the product. In the case of epoxy resins, it is possible to cause curing at low temperatures and increase the curing rate compared with the use of conventional amine-based curing agents3. Furthermore, compared with conventional thiol-based curing agents, Karenz MT PE1 has lower levels of odor.

SDK is now selling Karenz series functional monomers, including isocyanate monomer Karenz MOI for electronics. Besides electronics applications, Karenz MT PE1 will be used as curing agent for epoxy resins for paints, coatings and adhesives, whose demand is increasing in the field of construction and vessels. Thus, SDK has decided to increase the production of multifunctional-thiol-based Karenz MT PE1 and strengthen its functional monomers business. SDK is planning to increase the total sales of Karenz series products to 6 billion by 2015.

  1. UV-curing resins: A photo-curing resin that changes its properties following irradiation of ultraviolet rays. Used as coating materials and as photoresist in the production of electronic circuits.
  2. Multifunctional-thiol: Compounds whose molecule contains two or more groups of hydrogenated sulfur (-SH).
  3. Amine-based curing agents: Curing agents whose molecule contains amino groups (-NH2) reacting with epoxy resins at room temperature for curing.

About Showa Denko

Showa Denko K.K. is a major manufacturer and marketer of chemical products serving a wide range of fields ranging from heavy industry to the electronic and computer industries. SDK makes petrochemicals (ethylene, propylene) aluminum products (ingots, rods) electronic equipment (hard disks for computers) and inorganic materials (ceramics, carbons). The company has overseas operations and a joint venture with Netherlands-based Montell and Nippon Petrochemicals to make and market polypropylenes. In March 2001, SDK merged with Showa Denko Aluminum Corporation to strengthen the high-value-added fabricated aluminum products operations, and is today developing next-generation optical communications-use wafers. Headquartered in Atlanta, Huber Engineered Materials has offices in 15 countries.
