The Challenge

Adhesion and cold temperature resistance are crucial to ensuring a good end product quality in the freezer packaging industry. Hotmelt adhesive (HMA) formulators are challenged to reach high performance especially at very low temperatures.

The adhesive used for freezer packaging has to perform well enough to:

  • resist to temperatures as low as -18°C
  • ensure a prolonged adhesion to cardboard under cold temperatures

The Solution

A-C® maleic anhydride grafted low molecular weight (Mw) polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) additives added to the mEO HMA drastically improve the fiber tear at low temperatures on various cardboard types.

Adding these maleated PE or PP low Mw additives leads to stronger bonds with cellulose fibers. The low viscosity of these additives also contributes to better substrate wetting, which in turn improves adhesion.

The graph below compares mEO HMA formulations with and without the addition of maleated polyolefins.
