WATERTOWN, MA -- Pulpdent Corporation has developed a catalyst that successfully synthesizes PMGDM, a material essential for formulating certain dental adhesives. The chemical reaction that synthesizes the PMGDM molecule requires a special catalyst, and that catalyst suddenly became unavailable last summer, which resulted in a worldwide stoppage of the production of the PMGDM used to manufacture these dental adhesives. After many months of intensive research, Pulpdent was able to synthesize the catalyst, thus ending the shortage. Pulpdent is the only company in the world now synthesizing PMGDM suitable for manufacturing dental adhesives.
Since 1994, Pulpdent has been manufacturing adhesives under license from patents developed by Dr. Rafael Bowen and assigned to the American Dental Association Health Foundation. These adhesives contain PMGDM with the magnesium salt of NTG-GMA. PMGDM-based adhesives are marketed by numerous companies throughout the world, but production of the adhesives halted when the catalyst used to synthesize the PMGDM molecule became unavailable.
Thanks to an enormous effort on the part of Pulpdents science team, the company developed an effective catalyst, and Pulpdent is again producing 4th and 5th generation adhesives that are as good as or better than the adhesives it has manufactured in the past. Independent testing shows excellent results with shear bond strength greater than 29 MPa.
Pulpdent manufactures high-quality products for the dental profession, including adhesives, composites, sealants, provisional material, cements, etching gels, calcium hydroxide products, endodontic specialties, and bonding accessories.
