One Part Adhesives for Protective Masking

With goods increasingly being manufactured far from their point of sale using more automation and speed, the need to protect their surfaces with adhesive-coated masking film is becoming more prevalent. Adhesives used for protective film applications must have good anchorage to their face stock while also having low adhesion to the substrates that they shield. Many current applications require a two-part adhesive system where the adhesive is chemically cross-linked to the face stock. Although useful products can be made from such an approach, the limited pot life of these reactive systems complicates the production process. Recently, a one-part aqueous adhesive technology has been developed that delivers low ultimate peel adhesion and excellent anchorage to low energy filmic face stocks. Our presentation will describe the chemistry used in this new technology as well as some end-use examples.
