Braskem to Supply Raw Materials to BASFs Bahia Project for Acrylic Acid Production

Braskem has recently announced that it will supply propylene and other inputs for BASFs project in Bahia. Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the global leader in the production of biopolymers, presented at the launch of the Production Complex for acrylic acid, butyl acrylate and superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in Camacari, Bahia. With investments of around US$30 million, Braskem will be BASFs main strategic partner in the project, being responsible for supplying the new complex with propylene and soda.

Once the facility comes on stream, scheduled for 2014, Braskems propylene and soda output will be routed to the domestic market, thereby reducing the surplus allocated to exports. This will benefit Brazils trade balance by replacing imports, as well as favoring the entire acrylic acid production chain due to the projects production capacity and the size of the investment. The raw material to be supplied by Braskem, amounting to around US$200 million per year, will be used to produce acrylic acid, which is used in paint, as well as the textile and mining industries; butyl acrylate, which is a raw material for the textile and construction sectors; and superabsorbent polymers, which are used to produce diapers, as well as in water treatment and oil extraction, among other applications.
