Momentive Showcases Advancements in UV Cure Technology for Silicone-Based Medical Polymers

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Momentive Performance Materials Inc., one of the leading global provider of silicones and advanced materials, co-sponsored a full conference session titled, "Advances in Medical Polymers for Medical Devices" at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West Exposition and Conference in Anaheim, CA. During the session, in conjunction with Specialty Silicone Fabricators (SSF) Momentive presented a case study that demonstrates the ability to use UV (ultraviolet) light to vulcanize silicone elastomers containing different thermally sensitive materials at multiple concentrations.

During the MD&M West Exposition, Momentive demonstrated its UV, low temperature cure technology for silicone elastomers to showcase. Addisil UV 60 EX elastomer, which can be cured on demand by exposure to UV light. The new elastomer is an excellent candidate to consider for medical applications where lower temperatures during the manufacturing process and typical silicone rubber physical properties are required. The cure technology was demonstrated on Nordson equipment. Momentive and SSF also presented an abbreviated version of the case study results at the Innovative Brief sessions on the Expo Hall floor.

"It allows for very fast, on-demand cure at room temperature that can produce high quality products with tight tolerances. Room temperature cure also opens the door to new combinations with low temperature materials."

Representative samples of StatSil HCR 50 HC and StatSil HCR 55 HC have passed USP Class VI (United States Pharmacopeia 32, National Formulary 27, 2009. <88> Biological Reactivity Test, In Vivo tests) and ISO 10993 (Part 6, 10, and 11) tests using Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
