Dow Corning Unveils Silicone Weatherproofing Sealant for Construction and more

To address what current air barriers were lacking and deliver more of what architects need to design more sustainable buildings, Dow Corning Corporation ? a global leader in silicones and silicon-based technology and innovation with more than 40 years of experience in the construction industry - has introduced an air and water barrier system.

Evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) the Dow Corning Silicone Air Barrier System is a suite of compatible high-performance silicone technologies designed to work together to better protect the entire building envelope and to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. The system has passed NFPA 285 and is NFPA Class A/UBC Class 1 per ASTM E84. It can be used on both new construction and building renovation projects, and its low-VOC formulation makes it ideal for green construction.

"We created the Dow Corning Silicone Air Barrier System to address the shortcomings of other air barrier systems on the market today ? systems that were unsatisfactory in terms of fire rating, durability or UV resistance; systems that required too many installation steps, were incompatible with other building envelope components or lacked technical support," said Dow Corning High Performance Building Marketing Manager Jim Stange.

The Dow Corning Silicone Air Barrier System includes:

Dow Corning DefendAir 200 (PDF) ? The only water-based 100 percent silicone liquid-applied air and water barrier on the market, Dow Corning DefendAir 200 offers a one-coat spray or roller application ? with primerless adhesion to most construction substrates ? and dries to form a seamless, flexible membrane. It is vapor-permeable and breathable, exceeds industry requirements for airtight performance, has UV resistance, and can be applied at temperatures as low as 20°F (-6.7°C).
Dow Corning Silicone Transition System (PDF) ? Featuring 100 percent silicone rubber strips and corners that are easy to install with silicone sealants (not mechanical fasteners) this system forms a continuous airtight transition at interfaces, including those that will experience large amounts of building movement.
Dow Corning brand silicone sealants ? Dow Corning silicone sealants are compatible for use with the components of the barrier system, including Dow Corning 791 Silicone Weatherproofing Sealant, which may be used in through-wall flashing applications and to seal penetrations.
