The Chair of Load-bearing Structures at the University of Siegen has been commissioned to develop multi-pane insulating glass units with bio-based sealants in the edge seal. It is working with the company Glaszentrum Weber + Wagener GmbH & Co. KG from Freudenberg.
Increase sustainability of thermally insulating glazing
A multi-pane insulating glass with bio-based sealants in the edge seal is being developed to significantly increase the environmental friendliness and thus the sustainability of thermally insulating glazing.
The function of a multi-pane insulating glass unit as a heat-insulating element in the building envelope is largely dependent on the durability of the edge seal. However, the sealants currently used in production contain hazardous substances such as mercury and are therefore not considered environmentally friendly. The use of sustainable sealants in the edge seal of insulating glass units is therefore becoming increasingly important.
Sustainable sealants are bio-based materials that have no negative impact on the environment during production and application. Compared to conventional sealants, they contain fewer harmful chemicals and biodegradable components. Environmentally friendly glazing can be realized with a bio-based sealant in the edge seal of a multi-pane insulating glass unit.
